REGIONAL TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE SET
The Dalles defeated Tualatin Hills 17-7 in a 5-inning championship game on Tuesday night to claim the North Oregon 13-15-year-old Babe Ruth State Championship and nail down the final remaining berth in the Pacific Northwest Regional Championship, which opens play Monday in Astoria.
Ten teams from five states and two Canadian provinces will bring an estimated 2000 visitors to Astoria next week for the tournament, which will determine one of eight Babe Ruth World Series berths.
Festivities begin at 5:30 p.m. Sunday night at Ernie Aiken Field with the opening ceremonies and presentation of the teams followed by a group dinner and a skills competition.
The actual tournament begins at 10:00 a.m. Monday morning with four games each weeknight at 10, 1, 4, and 7:00 p.m. during pool play. The top two teams from each 5-team pool will advance to the championship round on Saturday, with the eventual winner proceeding to the 13-15-year-old World Series in Andalusia Alabama in mid-August.
The American pool includes host Astoria, British Columbia champion West Kootenay of Trail, Alberta representative Calgary, Montana champ Helena and Douglas, Wyoming, which is making its first regional tournament appearance in more than thirty years.
The highly competitive National pool includes North Oregon champion The Dalles, South Oregon champ Josephine County, South Washington champion Kelso, North Washington champ Central Basin and Idaho champion Lewiston, whose team, along with Astoria and Calgary, will be making its third consecutive Babe Ruth Regional Tournament appearance.
All of Astoria's games will be broadcast live locally on SportsRadio 1230 ESPN.
