WHEALDON SIX BACK AT WJGA CHAMPIONSHIPS
Ilwaco High School golfer Jack Whealdon shot an opening round 77 at Fircrest Golf Club and enters second round play tied for 18th place at the Washington Junior Golf Association Championships.
Nick Varelia of Kent holds a one stroke lead, six strokes ahead of Whealdon in the Boys 16-17 age group.
The event, being held at several golf courses in the Tacoma area, continues through Friday.
Whealdon's younger brother Patrick, one of two Peninsula golfers competing in the Boys 14-15 age group, shot an 86, two strokes behind teammate Ryan Kukula of Ocean Park. Both golfers are well behind the leader Chris Williams of Moscow, Idaho, who carded an opening round 66 to carry a 4-stroke lead into the second round.
In the Boys 12-13 age group, Ross Kukula sits in a 17th place tie after a first-round 85, nine strokes behind the leader Charlie Kern of Mercer Island.
