RUBBER-ARMED RIGHTY LEADS J-CO TO WIN

Just two days after throwing seven innings and 131 pitches in an 8-7 win over Lewiston, Josephine County's Dillon Gardner, a Rogue River freshman, tossed five strong innings of shutout ball to lead the Grants Pass-based All-Stars to an 8-2 victory over The Dalles Wednesday.

Josephine County stayed alive in the hunt for a championship round berth and put a major roadblock in front of The Dalles, which dropped to 0-2 in pool play.

Gardner, featuring a sharp overhand curve and a sinking fastball, fanned six batters and walked only one while allowing three hits, while dueling The Dalles pitcher Zach Fowlkes.

Taylor Bars gave Josephine County a 1-0 lead with an RBI single in the third inning and the 1-0 lead held up until the sixth inning, when the South Oregon champs finally got to Fowlkes and reliever Duncan Wilcox for six runs to blow the game open.

Gardner had an RBI double in the inning, finishing 2-for-3 at the plate. Catcher Ryan Schrader had three hits in four at bats for Josephine County, which has a big showdown with 2-0 Kelso Friday morning at 10:00 a.m.

Nico Carbone went 2-for-3 for the Dalles and is tied with Calgary's Ken Forrester for best batting average (.833, 5-for-6). The Dalles needs to win its final two games against Central Basin Thursday (4:00 p.m.) and Lewiston Friday to have any hope of advancing.
