JACKSONS SCORCH KNAPPA SUMMER LEAGUE

The inaugural Knappa Summer League basketball season got underway last night at Knappa High School with three games. The biggest surprise of the night: Brian Jackson wasn't the highest scoring player in his own family!

Former Rainier guard and current Lower Columbia Red Devil Kyle Jackson scored 40 points to lead Ed's Septic to a thrilling 95-94 victory over The Logger. Former Oregon State standout Brian Jackson, Kyle's more famous cousin, netted 37 to lead Teevin Brothers to an easy 74-55 victory over Nygaard/Hunt.

The six-team league features current varsity standouts from the area combined with recent graduates and past hoops stars such as the Jacksons, Ilwaco's Paul Jarrett, Knappa's Mike Cokley, Nate McBride and Zach Gantenbein from Warrenton and Astoria's Matt Johnson and Luke Roman. Games will be played Monday, Tuesday and Thursday nights with three games a night starting at 6:00 p.m.

In the first game of the night, Danger Den had four scorers in double figures led by Tex Cokley's 19 points to defeat Western Underground 88-63.

The league rules are loose with a slightly more organized playground atmosphere. Games are shirts versus skins and self-officiated, except for the final four minutes if its close, when an offical takes over and free throws are shot on fouls.

Over ninety players made themselves available for the inaugural draft. The regular season concludes Monday, August 14th with four teams advancing to playoffs the following day. The championship game is scheduled for Thursday, August 17th. There will be no games next week while Knappa's gym floor is refinished.

Rosters are set and no new players may join this season, but league organizer Craig Cokley hopes to continue the league in the future and potentially expand the number of teams.

Nineteen current high school players are in the league, including:
