WARRIORS SWEEP AT ILWACO

In their final games before the District 9 OJBA Tournament, the Warrenton Warriors picked up a pair of non-league wins at Ilwaco.

Tyler Collier and Dan Wolfe combined to strike out 16 Ilwaco batters in a 6-4 Warrenton victory in game one. Game two was close until a 10-run seventh inning for Warrenton, keyed by a Nathan Massey 3-run home run, as the Warriors ran away with a 15-4 win.

Collier outdueled Ilwaco senior-to-be Anthony Wirkkala, fanning 14 batters while allowing four hits and three earned runs over five-and-a-third innings. Wolfe cleaned up, fanning two batters over the final inning-and-two-thirds.

The Warriors picked up eight hits with Wolfe, Eric Gantenbein and Buddy Davis getting two apiece. All three had doubles while Davis added a triple and three runs batted in to pace the Warrior offense.

Wirkkala fanned ten Warriors batters in a fine complete game performance.

In game two, the Warriors were clinging to a 5-3 lead before the game unravelled for Ilwaco in the seventh inning, with Warrenton punching up a 10-spot with only three hits in the inning.

Eric Gantenbein got credit for the winning, tossing six innings of 4-hit ball with just one earned run allowed. The senior righthander struck out five and walked one and led the Warriors at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and four runs batted in. Davis continued a fine day at the plate with three hits in five at bats and Wolfe went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs batted in and three runs scored.
Brandon Slaughter went 2-for-2 as eight different Warrior batters recorded hits in the win.

The Warriors completed the summer regular season with a 16-4 overall record after getting credit for a pair of forfeit victories over Rainier when the Columbians failed to show for a Thursday doubleheader.

Warrenton will open the OJBA District 9 Tournament at Knappa with a game against Seaside, scheduled for 5:00 p.m. Friday. Astoria will play the winner on Saturday at 2:00 p.m. and the losers of the two games will meet at 5:00 p.m. Saturday in a loser out contest. Two teams will qualify for the state tournament and they will play off for seeds on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. and again at 5:00 p.m. if necessary. The state tournament will be played at Pleasant Hill High School and Marist High School in Eugene the following weekend.
