11'S REACH CHAMPIONSHIP, ADVANCE TO REGIONALS

The Lower Columbia 11-year-old Cal Ripken All-stars will compete in the Pacific N.W. Regional Tournament for the second consecutive year. They nearly added an additional tournament to their schedule.

With a berth in the 12A State Tournament on the line, Lower Columbia lost to West Linn 12B (Hughes) 5-0 in the championship of the combined state 11/12B tournament at Naselle Sunday.

Explosive offensively all tournament long in five straight victories, L.C. ran into a hard-throwing lefthander pitcher for West Linn and could muster only two hits and no runs.

Earlier in the day, Lower Columbia played in perhaps the most exciting game of the tournament, scoring four runs in the sixth inning to tie and one run on a bizarre play in the seventh to defeat Sandy 12B 9-8, earning a berth in the finals.

Lower Columbia actually trailed 8-2 before beginning its comeback. In the sixth, two big walks and two big hits helped L.C. even the score as Andrew Bergeson hit a 2-run double and Nick Freitas tied the game with an RBI triple.

Batting in the top of the seventh inning, Lower Columbia's Chandler "Bob" Chapman drew a one out walk, stole second and continued to third on a throwing error by the catcher. Will Samp followed with a grounder to second base against a drawn-in Sandy infield. The second baseman threw home to try to prevent the go-ahead run but the first baseman crossed in front of the throw and took it in the ribs as Chapman scored. Bergeson pitched a scoreless seventh inning to notch the win.

Both Lower Columbia and West Linn's 11-year-old teams will compete at regionals, which begins in the Eugene area at the end of the month.
