L.C. 11'S BREEZE THROUGH FIRST POOL GAMES

The Lower Columbia 11-year-old Cal Ripken All-stars defeated two opponents by ten run margins in the opening round of the North Oregon combined 11/12B State Tournament in Naselle.

Playing at the Lions Club field Friday morning, Lower Columbia rolled up 11 runs in the first two innings on the way to a 20-10 victory over Dallas 12B.

Dallas 12B prolonged the game by scoring six runs on four hits and a pair of errors in the third inning to make it a 12-7 ballgame at that point. But L.C. kept pouring it on offensively, adding two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings and notching four more runs in the sixth.

Kyle Kelly led the way at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double, three RBI's and three runs scored. Keelin Cuifici also went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs and Josh Biel was 2-for-4 with three runs and an RBI.

In the anticipated matchup of the two 11-year-old teams at the tournament, Lower Columbia completely dominated perennial power West Linn, on the way to a mercy-rule shortened 14-1 shellacking in five innings.

Jeremy Poyer pitched five innings of 1-hit ball for the win and Kyle Kelly continued a productive Friday at the plate with three more runs batted in, going 2-for-3. Kyle LuCore had his second multi-hit game of the day, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored and Nick Freitas hit a 2-run triple in the second inning, scoring three times in the game.

Lower Columbia outhit West Linn 9-to-1 and committed just one error to West Linn's six. Lower Columbia's opponents combined for 20 errors to just five for the home team on the day.

Lower Columbia 11's play their final pool game this morning against one of two 12-year-old B teams from West Linn, then faces single elimination competition later in the afternoon.

The Lower Columbia 12B's lost a pair of close games Friday, falling to Newberg 14-12 and West Linn 12 B(Hughes) 4-2. The L.C. 12B's complete pool play against Sandy 12B this morning.
