FISHERMEN NO-HIT MCKAY
Matt Brause and Hans Lund combined on a no-hitter and the Fishermen bats rapped out six extra base hits in a 10-1 victory over McKay in the nightcap game on day two of the Astoria Ford 4th of July Tournament.
Things didn't start out so rosy for the home team, however. Gil Saucido reached base to lead off the game on a throwing error on second baseman Jared Rummell. The McKay third baseman stole second and sprinted to third when catcher Brendan Landwehr's throw went into center field. Uncharacteristically, Brause walked the next two batters to load the bases, then uncorked a wild pitch to score Salcido, before issuing a third consecutive free pass to reload the bases with nobody out. A potentially big inning for the Scots was snuffed out when the Astoria senior fanned the next two batters and coaxed a 4-3 groundout to end the inning with only one run crossing the plate.
Brause would retire seven straight batters and 13 of the next 14 men he faced, nine on strikeouts. Throwing more four-seam fastballs than ususal, Brause dominated the McKay order over five innings, striking out 11 batters while issuing six walks.
Meanwhile, the Astoria offense had a quick answer in the bottom of the first inning. With one out, Tom Jaworski doubled and scored on a Jordan Poyer bunt single when the throw to first by McKay pitcher Matt Kramer was wild. The Fishermen teed off on Kramer, rolling up six first inning runs. Brause followed Poyer's bunt with a 2-run home run to left field. Landwehr singled and Adam Koehnke doubled, with a hit by pitch to Joey Dursse loading the bases. A walk to Hans Lund scoring Landwehr would end Kramer's short stint on the mound.
A failed squeeze did not slow the Fishermen attack as Gabe Davis reached on a walk and two more runs came in to score on an infield single by Brent Culver, when Davis got caught in a rundown between second and third. Davis did his part by keeping the play alive long enough for Dursse and Lund to score, but his sacrifice was more than expected when he injured the pinkie finger on his left hand diving into third base. Davis' immediate status is unknown.
The Fishermen would get two more home runs, a solo shot from Joey Dursse in the third inning and a leadoff bomb by Poyer in the sixth, his second of the tournament.
Lund closed out the game on the mound, tossing two perfect innings with four strikeouts as Brause and Lund combined for 15 K's on the night.
Jaworski went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and Koehnke doubled twice in four at bats as the senior outfielder continued his recent power surge. Poyer and Brause each had two hits and Dursse scored a pair of runs for the Fishermen, who close out their first annual 4th of July tournament against rival Seaside at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday.
McKay will face Milwaukie, a 10-5 winner over Seaside (story below) at 2:00 p.m.
The Fishermen return to North Coast District play with a home doubleheader against Warrenton Thursday at 5:00 p.m.
