BABE RUTH TEAMS RETURN TO KELSO

The two-time defending state champion Astoria 14-year-old Babe Ruth All-stars are finally starting to show signs of life this summer.

After losing their first two games at the Kelso "Celebrate Freedom" Tournament this weekend, Astoria got a big win over defending South Washington champion Kelso, winning 13-5 on Sunday morning.

The previously quiet bats erupted in the fifth inning of a close game.

After Kelso took a 5-4 lead with three runs in the top of the fifth, Astoria began the fifth inning with six straight hits. Astoria would record nine hits in the inning, two by Marc Gallegos, scoring seven runs to blow the game open. Three more hits in the sixth inning, including triples by Max Johnson and Joe Strickland, accounted for two more runs as Astoria outhit Kelso 19-7 in the victory.

Max Johnson pitched five innings for the win. Marcus Brown tossed two perfect innings of relief and went 4-for-4 at the plate with two RBI's and three runs scored.

After tallying three first inning runs against Kelso 15's in the tournament semis, the fire went out for Astoria as Kelso went on to pound the pitching-short 14's 13-3 in five innings. Kelso held Astoria to three hits, while none of the top four pitchers saw action in the game for Astoria, resting their arms for the beginning sometime after July 4th in Portland.

The Astoria 15-year-olds were eliminated from the same tournament, losing all three of their pool games Friday and Saturday.

District tournaments begin for all four Babe Ruth teams this week. Information regarding scheduling was still unavailable on Sunday, despite the tournaments beginning midweek. The 13 and 14-year-old tournaments will be at Walker Stadium in Lents Park in Portland, while the 15-year-olds will play at Fowler Middle School in Tigard.
