10-YEAR-OLDS MAKING PROGRESS
The Lower Columbia 10-and-under Cal Ripken All-stars are still looking for their first win, but showed improved play this weekend in a tournament at Hoquiam's Jump Field.
One big inning cost L.C. a pair of wins on Saturday as the area all-stars dropped pool play games to Western Longview A (12-0) and Hoquiam (10-2). Western scored ten runs in the first inning and Hoquiam rattled off six runs in the third inning of the loss. Nick Strange pitched well in the first game against Western and went 2-for-2 at the plate in the Hoquiam loss.
On Sunday, fourth seeded Lower Columbia took on Sandy, the top seed in the opposite bracket. Again, it was one costly big inning that turned the game into a rout as Sandy blew open a one-run game with a 9-run fifth inning to win 15-6. L.C. got a strong start on the mound from Matt Bergerson and Matt Scrabeck went 3-for-3 at the plate with a walk.
Defensive breakdowns were the common denominator in the big innings given up by Lower Columbia this weekend, but the bats are finally starting to make some noise and there were quality pitching performances.
Lower Columbia now prepares for the state tournament at Newberg, beginning Friday, July 7th.
