BABE RUTH BASEBALL
Kelso Celebrate Freedom Tournament: It was another long day for the Astoria 14 and 15-year-old Babe Ruth teams as both lost a pair of games at Kelso. The 15-year-olds continue to swing the bats well but have struggled with fielding and baserunning errors that have been costly. Hesitating a couple of times between first and second, Leach barrelled into the Longview second baseman in front of the bag, knocking him out of the game with an injury.

The 14-year-olds were held hitless by Lacey pitcher Joe Hussey in a 9-0 defeat. Astoria did rebound to play a strong game against a good Kelso 15-year-old team, falling 5-2 in the nightcap. Astoria grabbed an early lead on a 2-run single by Marcus Brown in the first inning. 10-12-year-old All-Stars...Lower Columbia A won two of three games Saturday at a double-elimination tournament at Castle Rock, putting them into the tournament semifinals Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. L.C. blanked Mason County 2-0, getting another dominating two innings from Conor Harber, who struck out the first 12 batters he faced at the tournament. Lucas Foster pitched two innings of relief with three strikeouts for the win and Dylan Smith and Bretten Medina held Mason County at bay for an inning each. The Lower Columbia bats finally came alive in a 15-0, 4-inning mercy rule win over the host team Castle Rock-Toutle Lake. Harber and Foster split the innings, combining for seven strikeouts while allowing just two hits. Lower Columbia suffered its first loss in the tournament at the hands of defending Pacific N.W. Regional champion Black Hills, falling 9-1. L.C. continued to get quality pitching, but a couple of defensive letdowns caused a close game to get away. If L.C. wins its game Sunday afternoon, it will set up a rematch against Black Hills at 3:45 p.m. Lower Columbia would have to win two games against the Olympia-area powerhouse to win the tournament.

11-year-old All-Stars...The Lower Columbia 11's rebounded from Friday's loss to Western with a pair of victories, defeating the Portland Bulldogs 13-7 and topping Hoquiam 8-5. That gives L.C. a number two seed into bracket play and a 9:00 a.m. Sunday game against Western Select, Western Longview's B team. Jeremy Poyer struck out seven batters and walked three over five innings pitched to get the win against Portland and contributed three hits at the plate in three at bats. Kyle Kelly also had a pair of hits in the victory. Poyer had a 2-run double in the win over Hoquiam.
