AREA 11'S AND 12'S REACH TOURNEY FINALS
The Lower Columbia 11 and 10-12-year-old Cal Ripken All-star teams each reached the championship game of their respective tournaments this weekend in Cowlitz County.
Playing in a double elimination tournament at Castle Rock, the 12-year-olds lost both of their games to a team from Black Hills that went to the 11-year-old World Series last year, the final loss coming in the championship game by a 10-0 margin.
Lower Columbia defeated Sandy 8-6 on Sunday afternoon to reach the finals. Lucas Foster, Nick Zimmerman, Dylan Garcia, Conor Harber and Dalton Kelly all saw time on the mound in the victory.
Dalton Kelly kept Black Hills off balance with an effective curveball for five innings, but the Olympia-area team eventually erupted for ten runs to win 10-0 after beating L.C. 9-1 on Saturday.
The 11-year-old All-stars suffered a similar fate at Longview's John Null Park, beating everyone except the tournament champions, host Western Longview. Western knocked off Lower Columbia 10-0 on Friday in the pool play opener for both teams, before L.C. ran off four straight wins, defeating Portland Bulldogs 13-7 and Hoquiam 9-5 to close out pool play on Saturday and winning two more games on Sunday to reach the championship.
Lower Columbia clobbered Western Select 18-0 Sunday morning, outhitting the Western B squad 13-to-2 as Andrew Bergerson pitched three innings for the victory and Nick Freitas tossed two hitless innings in relief. Bergerson went 2-for-4 at the plate with a triple, while Jeremy Poyer, Kyle Lucore and and Cody Fox had two hits apiece.
In the semifinals, Lower Columbia knocked off Tigard 8-2 before falling to Western A again in the championship by a 10-2 score.
