SEASIDE CAL RIPKEN 12'S WIN TOURNEY
Playing in their first tournament of the summer and battling the unfamiliar dimensions of Junior Baseball of Oregon, the Seaside 10-12-year-old Cal Ripken All-stars took first place at a tournament at Tualatin Hills Park and Recreational District in Beaverton this past weekend.
JBO baseball differs from Little League and Cal Ripken in that the dimensions are closer to a full-size baseball field, with ten extra feet between the bases and four more feet from home plate to the pitchers' mound, which makes it all the more impressive that Seaside was able to defeat teams accustomed to playing under these conditions.
Seaside defeated the Tice Titans 4-3 in the championship game Sunday. Eddie Soller struck out the final batter of the game with the tying run on third base and the go-ahead run on third. Soller also went 2-for-2 with an RBI triple in the first inning. Nick Nelson doubled in Soller to give Seaside an early 2-0 lead over Tice, a team based in the Rockwood area of Portland near Gresham.
Tyller Perry drew a bases loaded walk in the third inning to put Seaside up 3-0, before Tice struck for a pair of runs in the third. Nelson's RBI single in the fourth put Seaside up 4-2 before Soller snuffed out the final Tice rally in the top of the seventh inning.
Ben DeGandi went 2-for-2 with a double and a triple and Nelson pitched two innings of scoreless relief.
Seaside opened the tournament Saturday with a 16-2 victory over Sunset, a game ended after five innings by the mercy rule. DeGandi struck out seven batters in three scoreless innings of relief for the win. Nelson struck out four batters in the first two innings and went 2-for-2 with a double. Aaron Chesnut and Patrick Fritter each had two hits.
Seaside won a 9-8 thriller over Columbia Gorge Saturday night. Seaside started out hot, scoring six runs in the first inning, which featured extra base hits by Chesnut, Nelson and Soller. A 3-run third inning gave Seaside a 9-2 lead before Columbia Gorge rallied for five runs in the sixth inning to close within one. Again, it was Soller on the mound to close out the victory.
With the wins, Seaside improves to 4-2 overall and is off until the state tournament begins in Dallas a week from Friday.
