ASTORIA 13'S, 14'S FALL AT DISTRICTS
Beaverton scored seven runs in the second inning on the way to a 10-2 victory over Astoria in the semifinals of the Babe Ruth 14-year-old District 1 Tournament at Walker Stadium in Portland.
Beaverton will play the winner of today's Astoria-S.E. Portland loser out game on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. Astoria and S.E. Portland will meet today at 1:00 p.m. The winner must beat Beaverton twice to win the district championship. A second game if necessary is scheduled for Sunday at 4:00 p.m.
Astoria got on the board first when Marc Gallegos led off the game with a single, advanced on a base on balls to Taylor Landwehr and scored on Max Johnson's base hit. Beaverton got out of the inning relatively unscathed, recording three straight ground outs, including a fielder's choice at home to retire Landwehr.
Seven straight batters reached base in the second inning against Astoria pitcher Cody Strickland as Beaverton took a commanding 7-1 lead.
Astoria would threaten to score on several occasions, getting nine hits in the game but leaving ten runners on base. The other Astoria run came in the fifth inning when Johnson doubled and scored on a Marcus Brown base hit. Brown would be caught stealing ahead of a Strickland triple, costing Astoria further attempts to score in that inning.
Johnson, Brown and Strickland had two hits apiece as Beaverton outhit Astoria 11-to-9.
It was a similar story for the Astoria 13-year-olds, who picked up eight hits against S.E. Portland but could only scratch out one run in a 4-1 loss. Skylar Olsen doubled and scored on a passed ball in the seventh inning for the only Astoria run of the game.
S.E. Portland led 1-0 much of the game after scoring in the second inning. Leading 2-0 in the seventh, S.E. Portland scored two more runs before Astoria's tally in their final at bat.
Erik Keating also doubled for Astoria, which faces a familiar opponent today when the A and B teams square off in a loser out game at 7:00 p.m. The Astoria 13B team stayed alive in the tournament with a 6-3 win over Grant last night.
