ASTORIA 14'S WIN "SHORT" OPENER
Despite the 5-inning mercy rule being invoked, it took Astoria more than two and a half hours to defeat S.E. Portland 15-5 in the opening round of the Babe Ruth District 1 14-year-old Tournament opener at Walker Stadium in Portland Wednesday night.
After completing play after 10:00 p.m. last night, Astoria will turn around and play the first game today, taking on Beaverton in a 1:00 p.m. semifinal.
Astoria never trailed, scoring four runs in the first inning and single runs in the second and third innings. Still, it was only a 5-2 lead heading into the fourth inning after missed opportunities to blow the game open with the bases loaded in each of the first three innings.
Astoria finally opened up a comfortable margin in the fourth, getting the big hits with the bases loaded they were unable to procure in the earlier innings. Pinch-hitting Jake Hatcher got plunked with the sacks jammed, forcing in Dane Lund with the first run of the inning. Marc Gallegos followed with a 2-run double, driving in Taylor Landweher and Cody Strickland. One out later, Max Johnson plated another pair of runs with a double. What followed were three errors, a Cody Strickland single and a pair of walks, one following a 9-pitch at bat to Dylan Israel with the bases loaded. When the dust finally settled, 14 batters had come to the plate and eight runs had scored, giving Astoria a 14-2 lead heading into the fifth inning.
S.E. Portland struck for three runs against reliever Cody Strickland to prolong the game another half inning, before Strickland atoned with a single up the middle with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the fifth to end the game.
Max Johnson got the win for Astoria, allowing just one hit over four innings pitched with four strikeouts and three bases on balls. Johnson also went 2-for-3 at the plate with three RBI's and two runs scored. Gallegos went 3-for-5 and Lund reached base five times without a base hit, going 0-for-1 with three bases on balls and three runs scored.
