BABE RUTHS LOOK FOR CHAMPIONSHIP SWEEP
Three Astoria Babe Ruth tournament teams have reached district championship games today.
The Astoria 13-year-olds scored seven 1st-inning runs and never trailed on the way to a 14-6 victory over S.E. Portland Saturday night.
The win sets up a 7:00 p.m championship matchup against Beaverton. Astoria must win twice against Beaverton. A victory today would set up a second game on Monday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. at Walker Stadium in Portland.
Astoria now has 36 hits in three tournament games after collecting 12 safeties on Saturday. Only two hits came in a 7-run barrage in the opening inning, the key blow a bases-clearing double by Billy Kerr, who finished the game 3-for-3 with two doubles and three runs scored.
S.E. Portland would close the gap with a 3-spot of their own in the first inning and another run in the second. Starting pitcher Dylan Glover would not make it out of the third inning, allowing four runs on four hits and four walks with three strikeouts. Trygve Olsen came on with the bases loaded in the third inning to retire S.E. Portland leadoff hitter Dillon Abate on a foul pop to third base.
Scoreless in the second and third innings, Astoria blew the game open with five runs in the fourth on four hits and two S.E. Portland errors. Eric Keeting walked to open the inning, which featured an RBI single by Tyler Norfleet and a two-run single by Jacob Davis, who did not play on Friday after having his hand stepped on the previous day.
Olsen pitched out the game to pick up the victory, allowing two runs on four hits with four walks and one strikeout. Both teams surrendered eight walks in a lengthy affair.
Tyler Norfleet went 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Astoria played without Reese Johnson, who injured his thumb fielding a ground ball on the final play of the previous day's win. His status for today's game is questionable.
The Astoria 14-year-old All-stars blanked Beaverton 6-0, setting up a rematch at 4:00 p.m. today.
Max Johnson retired the first nine batters he faced, then worked out of a bases loaded one out jam in the fourth inning to preserve the shutout. Johnson worked the first six innings, allowing just two hits and one walk, while Marcus Brown retired the side in order with a strikeout in the final inning.
Johnson stole home in the first inning, after plating Marc Gallegos on an RBI fielder's choice, then tripled and scored on a throwing error in the third inning.
Hans Lund went 2-for-3 with a pair of runs batted in, Gallegos had a pair of hits and Trevor Couch had two sacrifice bunts.
The Astor1a 15-year-olds had the longest day, winning a pair of elimination games, including a 22-18 slugfest over S.E. Portland. The two teams meet again today at 1:00 p.m. at Fowler Middle School in Tigard, with the winner advancing to the state tournament in La Grande.
