FISHERMEN GUT GULLS
The Astoria Fishermen beat the Seaside Seagulls in every respect Thursday night in a Junior State North Coast District game at Broadway Field.
Twelve hits to two allowed, nine bases on balls drawn to none allowed and no errors compared to three committed by Seaside led to a 15-0, 5-inning whitewash and the 19th win of the summer against four losses for Astoria Ford.
Mathias Brause pitched another tidy game and had the benefit of a six-run lead before he threw his first pitch.
Senior Salvador Oros was the last Cowapa League pitcher to record a win against the Fishermen. His chances at a victory were pretty well vanquished by the time he reached the middle of the Astoria order in the first inning after three straight walks to load the bases and a pitch planted firmly on the backside of Brause to force in the first run. Four more runs would cross the plate on a Brendan Landwehr double, followed by an Adam Koehnke single and a fielding error before the first out of the game was recorded.
Astoria piled on with five more runs in the second inning with Landwehr and Koehnke again delivering RBI's, Landwehr on a sacrifice fly to center field and Koehnke on the second of hit three hits.
Meanwhile, Brause was on form once again, striking out the side in the first inning on a minimum of pitches, while facing just two over the minimum number of batters through a 5-inning, 2-hit stint with eight strikeouts and no free passes. The senior righthander's record improved to 21-0 combining the spring and summer seasons.
With a mercy-rule victory already in hand, leading 11-0, Astoria tallied four more runs off freshman-to-be relief pitcher Ian Dueber in the fourth inning. Brause drew a walk with the bases loaded, Brendan Landwehr hit what should have been an inning-ending double play grounder to short that was bobbled for the third Seagull error. Mason Brause delivered a pinch-hit RBI single to left field and Brad Sarpola plated another run on a fielders' choice.
Poyer and Brause eached finished with three runs scored, Landwehr went 2-for-3 with three RBI's and Koehnke went 3-for-3 with two runs batted in. Matt Mizell and Ross Knutsen had the only Seagulls hits, Knutsen getting a crazy hop in center field as the ball bounced laterally about five feet to roll past Brent Culver to the wall for a double.
Astoria travels to Independence to face the Central Junior State team in a doubleheader Saturday at 2:00 p.m., then finishes off the regular season at home Monday night in a make-up game with Rainier. Seaside also has a make-up game scheduled Monday at Knappa before a non-league tilt against Scappoose on Tuesday.
