GULLS TOPPLE TAFT, NOW 3-0
The excitement continues to build for a Cowapa League-opening clash between Astoria and Seaside on October 6 that could potentially see both teams unbeaten going into the contest.
The Seaside Seagulls continued their hot start, pitching a shutout in a 21-0 home-opening victory over the Taft Tigers to improve to 3-0 on the season.
Dennis Olstedt had a pair of touchdowns and again topped the 100-yard mark in rushing, despite carrying the ball just seven times. Joey Denotta added 78 yards on five carries, with a 26-yard touchdown run to get the Gulls on the board in the second quarter. Later in the period, Olstedt found paydirt on a 40-yard run, adding a 12-yard touchdown run in the third period for the final score of the night.
"We ran the ball effectively," said Seaside head coach Dave Foust. "Some other kids stepped up and played because Ross Knutsen got kicked out. We had some kids take his spot. Joey O'Brien on offense and Kyle Truax on defense did a good job."
Both players will have to do a good job again this Friday against Newport, because OSAA rules stipulate that Knutsen will be suspended from that game because of the ejection, which followed a brief shoving match with a Taft player, who was also tossed on the first series of the game.
"It was just pushes," said a frustrated Foust. "Now they're out for two games. They could have talked to them. Both of them. But they didn't. We saw more flags in the first quarter than I've seen in two games combined."
There were 17 combined penalties in the game and few kept Taft drives alive, including a pair of roughing the kicker penalties. The Gulls also lost a fumble on the Taft 1-yard line.
Seaside's toughest test yet comes this Friday when the Seagulls host the Newport Cubs.
