GULLS CAN'T OVERCOME EARLY GOAL

Yamhill-Carlton's Joel Fordyce beat the Seaside defense for a goal just 90 seconds into yesterday's Cowapa League boys soccer match. The Tigers' defense held strong to preserve the 1-0 upset victory, handing the Gulls their first loss of the season.

"I thought we might be able to overcome that as we've overcome other games we fell behind early," said Gulls' head coach Jon Broderick, "but Yamhill marks very, very carefully. They packed it in and didn't pressure us much in our defensive half of the field and marked well in their defensive third."

Coach Broderick did like the way his team handled the final eight minutes of the match, as they created several opportunities to even the score.

"We were playing desperately but less frantically, I thought. We had several good chances. We hit the crossbar twice in the last five minutes and hit the post on a cross."

Yamhill had a golden opportunity to score a second goal during this period after a failed clearance, but a sliding save by "Captain" John Morgan kept Seaside in the match.

The Gulls will have a tougher test on Saturday at Gladstone in a 1:00 p.m. game before returning to Cowapa League play on Tuesday at home against Scappoose.
