STREAKY COMETS SHINE IN SWEEP

After struggling through come-from behind wins in games one and two, the Naselle Comets blew away a scrappy Adna squad in the the third game of a 26-24, 25-23, 25-8 sweep at Patterson Gymnasium to improve to 2-0.

The Comets trailed 15-6 in game one before fighting back to 18-19 on an Ashley Ahlstrom service winner. Adna played solid defense and mistake-free volleyball without putting up much in terms of attack. But it was enough to put the Pirates at match point leading 24-20 before Jamie Bighill set Cheryl Steppe for a kill. With Steppe serving, Bighill went to Ahlstrom for a putaway and a 22-24 deficit. Junior middle hitter Sylvia Herrold had a huge dig to keep the point and the game alive. Then the errors came in quick succession for Adna as the pressure increased and the Comets ran off four straight points to take the game 26-24.

Game two was a carbon copy, with Adna leading for all but three points. Down 23-21, a Herrold kill gave the Comets the side out. With Ahlstrom serving, Naselle scored three straight to take it, including a stuff block by Herrold and an ace at game point.

By game three, Naselle was clicking offensively, while Adna appeared to have thrown in the towel, discouraged at giving away two consecutive games with Naselle on the ropes. The Comets steamed to leads of 12-1 and 20-3 on the way to their second consecutive match sweep.

Herrold, already the recipient of numerous inquiries from collegiate programs, finished with 12 kills and four solo blocks.

The Comets host Central 2B League power Mossyrock on Thursday.
