RIVALS NIGHT IN VOLLEYBALL

Thursday night featured three volleyball matchups between rival schools in the Columbia Mouth region.

Facing Seaside in their Cowapa League opener, Astoria had its second consecutive strong performance, blitzing the Gulls 25-8, 25-13, 25-9.

Rarely do these schools play a 3-game match, and rarer still are the meetings this one-sided, but Seaside is in complete rebuilding mode after graduating nearly its entire varsity squad, while Astoria returns a wealth of talent on a team that should contend among the state's elite at the 4A level this season.

Warrenton and Knappa are no longer league opponents, but still fierce Clatsop County rivals. The Loggers also have a lot of rebuilding to do and Warrenton had the advantage of a game under its belt while the Loggers were on the court for the first time Thursday night. Like Astoria, Warrenton has yet to drop a game through two wins, as the Warriors swept the Loggers 25-22, 25-16, 25-16. Ashely Poole led the Warriors with five kills and Warrenton converted 83% of its serves in the victory.

The Naselle Comets have dominated their Bear River Ridge rivals in Ilwaco for a number of years. The Comets, state B tournament qualifiers in 2005, took care of business in their season opener with a 25-3, 25-11, 25-18 sweep. Talented junior Sylvia Herrold smacked 10 kills and Kellyn Pakenen added five putaways for the Comets. Pakenen also served 14 straight points in the game one rout. Ilwaco had its starting lineup intact for the first time this season and struggled early, before finishing strong.
