VOLLEYBALL-Warrenton 3, Ilwaco 0

Facing a shorthanded Ilwaco squad missing some ineligible starters, Warrenton cruised to a 25-9, 25-10, 25-17 victory over the Lady Fishermen in the season opener for both teams at Warrenton.

Warrenton exploited Ilwaco's shaky serve-receive with 15 aces, including four by sophomore Jordane Marxer during a 13-point run in the first game as Warrenton sprinted to a 19-6 lead.

With senior middle Chelsea Ogren pounding stray shots for overkills at the net, junior Ashley Poole putting away kill shots on the outside with authority and Lesleyanne Hayward covering the floor with accurate passing and serving rockets, the Warriors dominated the first two games.

In game three, Ilwaco found some momentum, building early leads of 8-4 and 14-9 behind stronger and more confident team play. Errant serving by Warrenton cost the Warriors six points in game two and continued to hamper them in game three as Ilwaco maintained the lead to the midway point of the set. A block at the net by junior Brandi Jasmin got the Warriors within two at 13-15, then with Poole serving, Warrenton rattled off seven straight points, getting kills from Poole and Amber Hackwith and a block for point by Ogren. Senior libero Audrey Dove served the final points on a 25-17 game three and sweep for Warrenton.

For an Ilwaco team looking to rebuild after several years of futility, there were positive signs as the Fishermen improved their play throughout the match and hope to continue their progress in their home opener tomorrow night against rival Naselle.
Ilwaco showed very little attack above the net with just two kills, but displayed the ability to get to balls defensively and junior Erin McDonnell served well and had a solid all-around game.

For Warrenton, Poole and Ogren had five kills each. Justine Marxer served a perfect 9-for-9 with two aces. The Warriors head to Knappa for a non-league game on Thursday night.
