GIRLS SOCCER-Seaside 5, North Marion 0
Featuring many fresh new faces on varsity, the Seaside Seagulls dominated their season opener at home, shutting out North Marion 5-0 at the Warrenton Soccer Complex.
Leading returning scorer Laura Romine, a senior forward, scored a hat trick in her season debut. Selah Weber notched the other two goal for the Gulls, who were rarely threatened on the defensive end, outshooting the Huskies 24-2 in the game.
"We were a little flat at our jamboree," said head coach Dave Rouse, "but we came out today with some good intensity."
Seconds after the opening kickoff, the Gulls had the ball pinned in North Marion's defensive third and rarely left that patch of turf. After four unsuccessful shots on goal, the Gulls tallied their first score when Weber scored in traffic in the tenth minute. A handball in the box set up Romine's first goal of the season, a patient penalty kick slipped inside the right post. Marla Olstedt set up Romine for the Gulls' third goal of the game in the 36th minute for a 3-0 halftime lead.
North Marion did not threaten the Seaside end of the field until the 38th minute, when returning all-league junior forward Michelle Dubenko got loose on a breakaway, but shot right at the keeper. A carbon copy breakaway in the second half by Dubenko was the only other Husky shot in the game.
Meanwhile, the Huskies' freshman keeper Jenaga Surkamp was kept pretty busy, recording 11 saves in the match.
"I think we should have scored more today," said Rouse. The keeper had some good saves, but had a lot of them that helped her. She had a couple of really nice saves, she's really quick. But, also, we made her look good a lot of times by just kicking the ball at her."
Weber made it 4-2 Gulls in the 47th minute and Romine scored her third goal of the match, grabbing the rebound after Ceara Lewis' close range shot deflected off the keeper.
Seaside takes an overnight trip to play their next two matches on the Olympic Peninsula, Friday at Port Townshend and Saturday at Chimacum.
