MULES WIN OT THRILLER AT ILWACO
These Mules don't kick, apparently. They just win.
Wahkiakum running back Klaus Sorenson ran in a successful 2-point conversion in overtime to lift the Mules to a stunning 42-40 victory over Ilwaco in a see-saw season-opening game for both teams at Peterson Field Friday night.
Ilwaco appeared to have the game in hand, leading 34-28 in the final minute of regulation when the Mules' quarterback Ty Briscoe, faced with third down and 24 on his own 37-yard line, found running back Brendan McClain deep down the field for a 63-yard touchdown pass. The Mules, who did not attempt a PAT kick all night, were unsuccessful on the 2-point conversion run as Ilwaco's Shane Persinger made a potentially game-saving tackle to force overtime.
Ilwaco was able to score on its first possession of the Kansas Plan overtime, with fullback Nick Morrison bulling into the end zone from two yards out. But Junior Talancon's PAT kick was no good, leaving the door open for the Mules to win the game on their possession.
It didn't take long. McClain, who finished with a team-high 101 yards rushing on 16 carries, took his final tote 22 yards to paydirt on the second play, leading to Sorenson's game-clinching three yard run to glory.
Ilwaco's junior running back Eddie Knick began his pursuit of a third consecutive 1000-yard season in fine style, rushing for 236 yards on 21 carries with a pair of long fourth quarter touchdown runs. Knick's 80 yard jaunt with 3:17 to go in the game broke a 28-all tie. Knick's running mate, fellow 1000-yard rusher Alex Martin, left the game early in the third quarter with leg cramps and did not return. Several players were affected by the unusual heat, which had Knick, among others, evacuating their pregame meals on the sidelines.
McClain had two touchdown runs to go with his game-tying TD catch. Sorenson, who rushed for 95 yards, also had a pair of TD runs for the Mules, who compete in the Central 2B League.
The final offensive numbers were very even, but Ilwaco failed to take advantage of Wahkiakum's five turnovers to push the game in its favor. Quarterback Jacob Nesbitt, a junior making his first start, looked solid, displaying the strong arm that has coaches and fans excited about his prospects. Nesbitt connected on 6 of 17 passes for 87 yards, including a 21-yard scoring strike to classmate Matt Kaino in the third quarter. A Kaino interception on the previous play set up the short scoring drive.
Knick nearly had a third long touchdown scamper on the final play of the first half. With the game tied at 14, Knick rambled 59 yards but was corralled short of the goal line. A lateral to try to keep the play alive was recovered by Ilwaco, but two yards short of the goal line as the half expired. Prior to Knick's final run of the half, Wahkiakum's Sorenson scored on a two yard run with four seconds left in the quarter. The Mules' two half-ending touchdowns, both coming in the final seconds, were critical difference-makers.
The Fishermen face another tough 2B opponent next week, when they travel to Menlo to take on the Willapa Valley Vikings. Tune in for live game coverage on KAST-AM 1370 with Danny Havel and Tim Wirkkala starting at 6:50 p.m. Friday.
