COMETS TROUNCE ASTORIA J.V.

Naselle quarterback Kyle Burkhalter rushed for three touchdowns and freshman Alan Erickson ran for a touchdown and returned an interception for another score as the Comets won their football home opener, defeating Astoria's J.V. 38-6 at Pentilla Field.

The Fishermen assembled a team of about 15 sophomores and juniors to compete in the contest against the Comets, who originally had scheduled Wahkiakum for the date before the Mules cancelled.

Burkhalter raced 53 yards down the right sideline for his third touchdown, giving Naselle a 38-0 lead early in the third quarter. Astoria, mostly ineffective, had two long drives stall deep in Naselle territory before striking for its only score, a 48-yard touchdown pass from sophomore Brian Van Gundy to junior Hans Lund in the fourth quarter.

Naselle rushed for 206 yards and Burkhalter completed 3 of 7 passes for 46 yards. Erickson had two grabs for 36 yards, adding a 4-yard touchdown run on a counter in the second quarter, but the 5-10, 185-pound freshman was most noticeable on the defensive side. After having a ball slip through his hands earlier in the quarter, Erickson picked off a Van Gundy pass and rambled 35 yards for a score, capping a 24-0 first quarter for Naselle. Erickson also recovered a fumble, thwarting a potential scoring drive for Astoria late in the third period.

Astoria caught a bad break in the first quarter when Trevor Puckett injured his ankle after being tackled behind the line of scrimmage. The most prominent player on the roster in the game, the 6-1, 180-pound sophomore is a starting outside linebacker and key special teams player for the Fishermen varsity. Puckett was playing in the game to get some extra repetitions on offense. He gained 35 yards on five carries before leaving with the injury, which is feared to be a broken ankle. He is scheduled to see an orthopedic surgeon today to confirm the diagnosis, which would sideline him for a minimum 4-6 weeks and possibly the rest of the season.

The Comets (1-1) travel to West Seattle next Friday to take on Seattle Lutheran in their final non-league game before opening their Pacific 2B schedule at home against Raymond the following week.
