WARRIORS STYMIE CORBETT, WIN OPENER
An opening drive score was all the Warriors needed as Warrenton opened its season by shutting out defending Northwest League co-champion Corbett 10-0.
Eric Gantenbein completed four of five passes on an 8-play opening drive, finding Michael O'Casey for a 6-yard touchdown. The senior halfback ran in the 2-point conversion and the Warriors defense took care of the rest.
"Coach [Lennie] Wolfe had a really good defensive plan," said Warrenton head coach John Mattila, whose squad lost a defensive battle in a pouring rainstorm at Corbett last season. "They threatened one time, but they had about three penalties in a row that took them away from the goal line. They never really threatened after that."
"I told our kids at halftime that they have to score three times to beat us. If we score one more time then its probably in the bag."
That additional score proved to be elusive, as the Warriors were blanked until a 4th-quarter safety produced two points. Not that the Warriors didn't have their opportunities before that, as Gantenbein was victimized by a receiving corp with a case of the dropsies.
"We had one touchdown called back for holding," said Mattila. "There were at least six drops that could have scored and probably more than that. We didn't catch the ball well. Gantenbein was throwing the ball O.K."
The Warriors were forced to the air by a stout, physical Corbett defensive front that held Warrenton to 56 yards on the ground.
"The difference was team speed," said Mattila. "They were bigger and stronger."
The usually run-oriented Cardinals weren't much more successful, rushing for 70 yards and throwing the ball an uncharacteristic 32 times, including a pair of halfback passes. Warrenton intercepted four passes, including three by Ryan Little, whose third pick ended the final Corbett drive in the end zone. Coach Mattila also praised the defensive play of Dan Wolfe, Tyler Collier and Eric Gantenbein, who recorded the other interception.
The Warriors go from one of the top defensive teams in the Northwest League to the top offensive team, when they face Portland Christian (2-0 with wins over Clatskanie and Rainier) next Friday.
