JAYS FALL IN FOOTBALL HOME OPENER

A close game early in the third period slipped away as for the second straight week the Jewell Blue Jays (0-2) were victimized by the big play, falling to Arlington 40-16.

Jewell scored right before halftime on a Cody Greenwood touchdown pass to Will Steinweg. After a two-point conversion, the Jays trailed just 20-16 at the break. But turnovers ended the first two drives of the second half and Arlington was able to gash the Jewell defense.

"They did a good job of executing their veer offense," said Jewell head coach Ryan Henderson. "Our secondary played a lot better, but we were unable to come up with some plays when we needed."

"We've got to find a way to play some defense and tackle some people and stop them."

Steinweg, who finished with 88 yards rushing, scored the other Jewell touchdown on a 40-yard end-around.

No other statistics were reported.
