LA SALLE 1, Astoria 0...at Milwaukie, the Lady Fishermen dropped their season opener to the Falcons, who scored their only goal of the match about midway through the first half.
"It was a nice attack on their part," said 2nd-year head coach Jim Flint. "La Salle is a very well-trained team and they played very well."
The Fishermen debuted their new "Flat Back Four" defense, which does not employ a sweeper or stopper.
"It's a new system and a challenging one becuase you mark space and mark players. Our back line did a good job of learning this new system and applying it in the game. We turned away 12 to 14 attacks"
Astoria will host Washington 4A school Battle Ground at 6:00 p.m. Friday night in its first home game.
PORT TOWNSHEND 2, Seaside 0...at Port Townshend, the athletic Redskins scored a goal in each half to blank the Gulls in a non-league match Friday.
CHIMACUM 4, Seaside 0...at Chimacum, a veteran Cowboys crew took advantage of a tired Gulls squad, scoring three first half goals on the way to a shut out victory on Saturday, dropping Seaside to 1-2 in non-league play. The Seagulls return home to face Blanchet in another non-league contest at the Warrenton Soccer Complex Wednesday at 5:00 p.m.
VOLLEYBALL
Seaside Invitational...The Gervais Cougars swept through the 8-team field unbeaten, defeating Rainier 25-12, 25-10 in the championship match. Warrenton gave the Cougars their toughest test, falling 25-20, 25-22 in the semifinals. Both Gervais and Rainier swept though pool play without dropping a game. The Columbians beat North Marion 25-22, 25-22 before falling to Gervais in the finals.
