HOLD EVERYTHING! ILWACO SKUNKED AT VALLEY
In game-planning for Willapa Valley, the Ilwaco coaching staff knew they would have to stop Ricky Bannish. They didn't expect him to be a receiving threat. They were right...kind of.
The Vikings, still missing star quarterback Brady Langer, threw just one pass in the game, but Bannish was on the receiving end of three balls thrown by Ilwaco as the Fishermen lost a mistake-filled 10-0 game at Crogstad Field to fall to 0-2 on the season.
A stout defensive performance went for nought, as Ilwaco repeatedly failed to finish drives.
Eddy Knick outran his counterpart Bannish, with both players coming off 200-plus yard performances in week one of the season.
Fast Eddy finished with 151 yards on 22 carries, but just 34 yards in the second half as Ilwaco repeatedly shot itself in the foot with either turnovers or penalties.
Junior quarterback Jacob Nesbitt completed 4-of-9 passes for 63 yards and four interceptions. The first of Bannish's three picks was the biggest, coming in the end zone to stifle an Ilwaco drive deep in Valley territory.
Bannish, who needed just 8 carries to top the 200-yard mark in a win over the Prairie J.V. last week, put the Vikings on the board, finally, with a 20-yard field goal, breaking a scoreless tie with 3:19 to go in the third period. A ten yard touchdown run by Aaron King early in the fourth quarter would complete the scoring.
Valley had just 164 yards of offense, all on the ground, with Bannish rushing for 115 yards on 22 carries. Valley's total offense about matched what Ilwaco racked up in penalty yardage, as the Fishermen were flagged a total of 17 times, including a remarkable 11 holding penalties! That, combined with five total turnovers to just one for the Vikings, sabotaged any offensive momentum the Fishermen were able to generate. Ilwaco managed 236 yards of offense.
The Fishermen return to action next Friday, again on the road, as they renew a league rivalry with Rochester, meeting the Warriors for the first time since the 2000 season, when both teams were members of the S.W. Washington 2A Evergreen League.
Catch all of the live action with Danny Havel and Tim Wirkkala beginning at 6:50 p.m. Friday night.
