JUST D.O. IT! GULLS 2-0

Senior wingback Dennis Olstedt completed a memorable performance Friday night with his second kickoff return touchdown of the season and his fourth TD of the night, leading the Seaside Seagulls to their second consecutive win on the road.

Olstedt's 85-yard return straight up the middle broke a 21-all tie with just over three minutes remaining in the game as the Seagulls defeated the Gladstone Gladiators 28-21, dropping the Glads' record to 0-2.

Olstedt provided the finishing blow in this game after returning the opening kickoff of the season for a touchdown in Seaside's zero week win at Cascade. But this was just the capper on an outstanding evening for the speedy senior, who squared off against one of the few 4A players that can match his accomplishments on the football field and in track and field.

Gladstone's Jordan Aldredge, the state 3A discus champ and fourth place finisher in the 100 meters last spring, rushed for 134 yards on 17 carries, including a 59-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. A missed extra point had the Gulls leading 7-6 at halftime, their score coming on an Olstedt 12-yard run in the first period.

Gladstone took the lead in the third quarter on a 1-yard touchdown plunge by fullback Nick Cieloha. A 2-point conversion pass gave the Glads a 14-7 lead.

Then Olstedt took over proceedings with part two of his touchdown trifecta, a 66-yard touchdown run that tied the score at 14. Olstedt, who placed in four events at Hayward field, including a pair of third place finishes in the hurdles, was on the receiving end of a 25-yard Ed Kauffunger TD pass that put Seaside in the lead in the fourth quarter.

Gladstone capped a long, time-consuming drive with another 1-yard plunge by Cieloha to tie the score at 21 before Olstedt ran back the ensuing kickoff for the game-deciding TD. The 4-year varsity standout finished with a team-high 109 yards on just seven carries and also led the Gulls in receiving yards with 37 yards on two catches.

Things got chippy toward the end of the game as Seaside tried to run out the clock by having Kauffunger take a knee. Not once, but twice Gladstone defenders launched themselves at the vulnerable signalcaller in what looked less like a vain attempt to cause a turnover than an opportunity to take a free shot at the QB. When that failed to shake the 6-6 junior, after the game in the handshake line, one of the same players who took a late shot gave Kauffunger an uppercut to the lower regions, setting off a minor skirmish. By all accounts, referees were not witness to this embarrasing incident. However, the Gladstone head coach expressed concern after the game and discipline is expected to be assessed in house.

The Glads, now 0-2, face their third consecutive Cowapa League opponent, travelling to 2-0 Astoria next Friday. Seaside hosts Taft at Broadway Field in the Gulls' home opener.
