TOP-RANKED FISHERMEN BLANK INDIANS
The Astoria Fishermen boys soccer team, the newly-minted #1-ranked 4A team in the state of Oregon, knocked off Scappoose 3-0 Tuesday night to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Second-team All-State forward K.J. Speer tallied his first goal of the year in the 20th minute to get the Fishermen on the board. Steven Wentworth sent a through ball to Speer, who beat a defender to the corner, then won a one-on-one battle with the Scappoose goalkeeper, his shot deflecting off the keeper and the near post before finding the back of the net.
Six minutes later, Kyle McMullen made a long run, laying the ball off for Josimar Macareno who redirected it into the goal, giving the Fishermen a 2-0 lead at the half.
In the 66th minute of play, junior midfielder Michael Price, an experienced Olympic Development player who transferred to Astoria from Arizona, scored off a corner kick for the final goal of the match.
"It wasn't a real possession-oriented game," said assistant coach Gordon Thomsen. We were able to play a lot of long balls into space and our offense was faster than their defense."
The Fishermen outshot Scappoose 25-3, with Gave Davis saving two of the Indians' three shots to record his second clean sheet in two games.
The Fishermen continue their long, season-opening road trip with a matchup against the 5A Wilsonville Wildcats Thursday night at 7:00 p.m. Astoria won't see its home field until the following Thursday when the Fishermen take on Seaside at the Warrenton Soccer Complex. Astoria and Seaside are each 2-0, with both of Astoria's wins coming against Cowapa League competition.
In other Cowapa League soccer action, Yamhill-Carlton defeated Tillamook 5-1.
