VOLLEYBALL ROUNDUP-Thursday
Warrenton def. Vernonia 25-22, 25-21, 25-17...The Warriors were not at their sharpest, but still came away with a 3-game win on the road, setting up a West Division first place showdown against Neah-Kah-Nie on Tuesday. Brandi Jasmin was Warrenton's most effective player, hitting a perfect 14-for-14 with three kills and two blocks. The Warriors (7-2 Lewis & Clark League West Division, 10-2 overall) trail first place Neah-Kah-Nie by a single game and lost to the Pirates at Rockaway in the team's first meeting. If Warrenton beats Neah-Kah-Nie in five games, the Warriors take first, otherwise the Pirates earn the right to play O.E.S. in the opening game of the playoffs based on a tiebreaker. All nine teams from the Lewis & Clark League will participate in a postseason tournament prior to state.
La Center def. Ilwaco 25-10, 25-7, 25-18...Ilwaco struggled against La Center, despite being as close to full strength as they have been in weeks. "They were killing us," said coach Candy Johnson. "Everything we did they hit back. We played too much defense, not enough offense."
Nestucca def. Knappa 25-13, 23-25, 13-25, 18-25...The Loggers (3-9 N.W. League, 3-10 overall) must win both of their remaining games to make the playoffs. Unfortunately, their next game is at #1-ranked Portland Christian on Tuesday.
Naselle def. North Beach...The Comets dropped a game, but stayed unbeaten at 5-0 in the Pacific 2B League with a win at Oyehut. Sylvia Herrold had 12 kills and Cheryl Steppe added 6 kills, while Jenny Klinger and Ashley Ahlstrom were defensive standouts. The Comets are 11-1 overall with a chance to avenge their only loss in a home match with South Bend on Tuesday. Prior to that, Naselle, along with South Bend, will participate in a tournament at Adna on Saturday.
Yamhill-Carlton def. Seaside 26-24, 25-20, 25-22...The Seagulls got strong contributions from seniors Natasha Adams and Meagan Macomb, but it was not enough to break into the win column on senior night at Seaside.
