PRESSURE...COMING DOWN ON THE GULLS

At the start of the Boys Preseason Cowapa League Tournament matchup between Astoria and Seaside Tuesday night, the Gulls knew that the Fishermen liked to bring pressure. But Seaside held fast.

For a moment.

Then it was over.

The biggest lead Seaside built was in the first quarter at 8-5, but Astoria turned up the pressure on the Gulls and sprinted to a 23-14 first quarter lead and never looked back, blowing past Seaside, 70-43 at the Brickhouse.

"They hung with us, even though we were getting our hands on the ball, it just seemed to keep going back to them (Seaside)," according to Chris Hunt, Astoria Head Coach. "Our guys just kept coming after them and finally, we pulled away."

Outscoring Seaside in every quarter except the fourth, Astoria built a lead to as many as 32 points, cleared their bench in the fourth quarter, and cruised to their 10th win in a row to move their overall record to 10-2. Seaside dropped to 6-6 and have lost two in a row to conference opponents (losing 60-48 to Tillamook last Friday night), in the non-league counting Preseason Tourney.

"While this is nice, we know that Seaside has some talent and they are improving," Hunt said after the win. "We also know that we'll have to see them at least two more times, maybe three. They'll come after us again."

Balance was again the key for Astoria, with no player scorng over 15 points, but with 7 players putting up at least 6 points to contribute towards the victory. Nic Alfonse poured in 14 points to lead all scorers, with Jordan Poyer chipping in 12. Ed Kauffunger, the Gulls impressive 6-5 senior post, could never really get on track, but led Seaside with 8 points.

Seaside will next play Banks in the final day of the Tournament on Monday at Linfield College at noon. Astoria has Tillamook Friday night (broadcast on AM 1370 KAST starting at 7:05 pm) to determine their seeding and their opponent at Linfield on Monday.
