LOGGERS ROMP TO FIRST LEAGUE WIN
The Knappa Loggers scored 15 runs in an ugly third inning on the way to a 24-0, 5-inning laugher against Country Christian on Tuesday, picking up their first 2A Special District 1 victory of the season.
Seventeen Loggers reached base in the inning, with the first eight climbing aboard via a hit batter and seven consecutive walks. Karac Anderson batted three times in the inning, hit by pitches in his first two at bats he drove in the 15th run with a base hit. Prior to that, three Loggers were hit by pitches and ten drew bases on balls.
"We were swinging at anything from helmet to shoelaces," said Loggers head coach Jeff Miller. "It got really ugly."
"Anderson got hit three times in the game. He got hit a fourth time on a curve ball, but they made him stay in the box."
Gary Aho saw enough pitches near the plate to continue his early season tear, going 3-for-4 with a bases-clearing triple in the Loggers' big inning, finishing with six RBI's and 4 runs scored. Aho also combined with Elias Hunsinger to pitch a five-inning no-hitter.
Freshman Cody Strickland, batting second in the order for the first time, went 2-for-2 with three runs. Hunsinger was 2-for-2 with four runs batted in and struck out two and walked two in two innings of hitless relief.
Dallas Oja and Mike Crawford each hit 2-run singles in the Loggers' third inning.
"I was a little surprised," said Miller. "They’ve lost some games, but they've always competed. I expected a competitive team. Their first pitcher was OK, but once we put it in play and got his pitch count up they had nowhere to go. To their credit, they didn’t quit. They kept playing and didn’t get their heads down."
The 5-3 Loggers host Clatskanie Wednesday in a non-league game and welcome the Gaston Greyhounds for a big league doubleheader on Friday.
