WARRIORS TOP ILWACO IN RIVER MOUTH MATCHUP
Dan Wolfe tossed a complete game three-hitter and four different Warriors had two hits each as Warrenton defeated Ilwaco 11-1 in a six-inning non-league game at Huddleston Field Wednesday.
Both teams avoided weeklong layoffs by scheduling the game the previous day. The Fishermen, now 1-2 on the season, are on spring break while the Warriors are off until Tuesday's Lewis & Clark League opener at Vernonia.
Junior leftfielder Michael Moore drove in four runs for the Warriors and junior third baseman Brandon Slaughter went 2-for-2 at the plate with a pair of runs scored as the Warriors opened up the lead with six runs in the middle innings off Ilwaco's senior ace pitcher Anthony Wirkkala.
"Today, for whatever reason, Anthony wasn't hitting his spots," said Mike Garcia, who is in his first full season as Ilwaco's head baseball coach after taking over midseason last year on an interim basis. "He was having some trouble with placement."
Wirkkala took over for starter Jordan Desimone to begin the third inning with the teams tied at 1-1. Warrenton second baseman Mike "Buddy" Davis worked a full count walk and advanced to second on an Eric Gantenbein base hit to the opposite field. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch before Bubba Massey hit a sinking line drive to freshman second baseman Zach Desimone, who pitched the ball to shortstop Ryan Garcia to double off Gantenbein at second base for the second out of the inning.
"We had three freshmen out there," said Garcia. "We have a freshman catching, a freshman at third base and we had little Desimone out there at second base as well."
"They might be freshmen, but they've played a lot of baseball."
Desimone was starting in place of regular second baseman Paul Blaylock, who started as a sophomore before missing most of last season with an elbow injury.
Wirkkala could not escape the inning unscathed, as Davis scampered home on a passed ball and just did beat the tag of the 6-4 all-league hurler for the go-ahead run. Although Wirkkala didn't have his "A" game, his defense did not help him much. The Warriors scored three more runs in the fourth inning on a wild pitch, another passed ball and an error, adding two more runs in the fifth inning on an errant throw by catcher Trevor Couch on a double steal and an RBI infield hit by Michael Moore.
Moore drove in the game's first run on a second inning sacrifice fly to score Billy Sturgell, who led off with a single. Moore ended the game in the sixth inning with the fifth hit of the inning off Ryan Garcia, scoring Massey and Chris Marks to reach the 10-run mercy-rule limit.
"Guys are doing a nice job," said Warrenton head coach Lennie Wolfe, whose team accumulated 11 hits off three Ilwaco pitchers. "We're so much better than we were last year dealing with two strikes, pitch selection...I'm very pleased about that."
Wolfe walked Jordan Desimone on four pitches to lead off the game, but settled down shortly thereafter, effectively locating his pitches and showing good velocity on his fastball. The senior four-year starter struck out seven and walked four with one hit batter. Desimone got plunked with one out in the third inning, advanced to second base on a Ryan Garcia walk and scored on a two-out single by Alex Martin for Ilwaco's only run. Desimone also reached on an infield single in the fifth inning to finish the game 1-for-1. Trevor Couch, Ilwaco's freshman catcher, had the only other Fishermen hit, a solid single up the middle to lead off the second inning. Couch would steal second and advance to third base on a groundout, but Wolfe got out of the jam by getting freshman Justin Short to ground out to Gantenbein at short.
"He threw some quality pitches against some of their better guys at key points in the game," said Wolfe. "That was good to see."
Ilwaco will have a busy week coming out of the break, with a make-up game against Ocosta on Monday, followed by a doubleheader against Naselle on Wednesday and a Trico Division doubleheader against White Salmon on Friday, all at home. Then it's off to Astoria on Saturday for the battle of the Fishermen at Aiken Field.
"We're young and a little bit inexperienced at some positions," said Garcia. "Right now, we're just trying to figure out who's going to be playing where and what works for us."
"We're really looking to have a good season. Next week we're going to have six games and that's going to be a true indicator of what's going to happen for the remainder of the season."
