FISH CRUISE TO 18TH STRAIGHT, COWAPA TITLE

Jordan Poyer went 3-for-3 with eight runs batted in and the Astoria Fishermen baseball team flattened another hapless Cowapa League opponent with a 21-2, 5-inning victory at Tillamook Monday.

With the win, Astoria matched its school-record winning streak of 18 straight games and officially clinched the Cowapa League championship for the second consecutive season and third in the last four.

Astoria scored in all five innings with Poyer launching a pair of 3-run home runs, adding a 2-run single. Joey Dursse also homered for the Fishermen, becoming the tenth Astoria player to clear the fence this season. Mason Brause nearly added his second home run of the season, launching a double off the wall to the deepest part of Tillamook's park, about 385 feet from home plate.

Nick Bredleau picked up the win, allowing five hits and no walks with two strikeouts in a four inning sting. Hans Lund cleaned up in the fifth inning, allowing one of the two Cheesemaker runs.

Brendan Landwehr went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs batted in for Astoria, which hosts Scappoose on Wednesday, looking for record win number 19 and Cowapa League win number 26 in a row. The 18-3 Fishermen then host The Dalles-Wahtonka for a non-league game on Thursday at 3:45 p.m. (broadcast on ESPN Radio at 3:35 p.m.) before closing out the week with a home game against Banks on Friday.

As the top seed from the Cowapa League, Astoria will open the playoffs at home on Tuesday, May 22 against the number two seed from the Far West League.

Astoria has scheduled a non-league game against Marist for next Tuesday to be played at Linfield University in McMinnville. The two teams also played before the state playoffs last season, with Astoria's Matt Brause outduelling future Oregon State pitcher Chris Vitus in a 4-2 Astoria victory. Vitus has since transferred to 6A Sheldon High School.
