LOWER COLUMBIA 12's PREPARE FOR TOURNEY
The Lower Columbia 12-yr-old Cal Ripken A All-Star team will face Black Hills B team tonight at 5:30 p.m. on the opening day of a tournament at Western Longview's John Null Park.
Placed in the Red Division, Lower Columbia will continue pool play Friday with a 3:00 p.m. contest against the Kennewick Americans, then face Puyallup at 12:30 p.m. Saturday. Depending on the outcome of the pool games, L.C. will play a single elimination game at 3, 5:30 or 8:00 p.m. Saturday and hopefully advance to bracket play on Sunday.
The team scrimmaged the Lower Columbia B team at Columbia Field Wednesday night, winning 18-2. Six different pitchers threw an inning each, with Luke Foster being the most effective, striking out the side in the fifth inning to earn the win. Conor Harber went 2-for-4 with a home run and five runs batted in and Dylan Krizan and Nick Zimmerman each went 2-for-3 with three runs scored.
The difference was on defense, where the A team committed just one error to 13 by the B's. Just five of the 18 runs were earned.
For the 12B's, Corey Dunn hit a solo home run in the first inning off A starter Breton Medina. Brad Aho went 2-for-2 at the plate, stealing home in the second inning for the B team's other run.
The Lower Columbia B team, coached by Bob Brockey and assisted by Gary Aho and Jeff Eaton, plays in a tournament at Castle Rock the weekend before Independence Day. The combined 11/12B state tournament will be at Naselle July 7-9. The top B team at that tournament will advance to the N. Oregon 12-and-under A tournament the following weekend at Dallas, while the first place 11-yr-old team moves on to regionals.
