ASTORIA GOING FOR REPEAT AND THREEPEAT

The Astoria 14-year-old Babe Ruth All-stars defeated Tri-County 5-1 in today's North Oregon State Tournament semifinals and will get a rematch with Pendleton for the state championship tonight at Aiken Field.

Cody Strickland was the complete game winner, allowing just four hits and three walks with four strikeouts.

Astoria never trailed but could never get comfortable either.

Marcus Brown went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and started Astoria's first scoring rally in the second inning, reaching on an error. An infield hit by Cody Strickland and a walk to Taylor Landwehr loaded the bases for Rick Sarin, who drew a free pass to force in Brown with the first run of the game. Drew Johnson relieved starting pitcher Bryan Holland and got Erik Knutsen to ground into a 4-6 fielder's choice, allowing Strickland to score giving Astoria a 2-0 lead.

Run-scoring doubles by Brown and Strickland sandwiched an RBI infield single by Max Johnson as Astoria pulled in front 5-0 in the third inning.

Astoria loaded the bases in the fourth with a chance to blow the game open, but Johnson grounded out to shortstop to end the inning.

Meanwhile, Tri-County put runners in scoring position in each of the first three innings, but Strickland continued to dance out of trouble, much as he did two nights ago against Pendleton.

Jordan Hatfield had Tri-County's first hit, a harmless two-out single up the middle in the fourth inning. The Heppner-area All-stars scored their only run in the fifth when Harold Stevens reached on an infield single, later scoring on a Wacy Coil fielder's choice.

Trailing 5-1, Tri-County's Justin Phillips led off the seventh inning with a hit, but one out later, second baseman Marc Gallegos caught a soft liner off the bat of leadoff batter Chris Lien and threw to first, doubling off Phillips to end the game.

Tri-County will play SRV Nationals for third and fourth place at 4:00 p.m. Astoria's All-stars will go for their third straight baseball state championship at 7:00 p.m. against Pendleton, a team they defeated 4-1 in pool play.

The winner of tonight's championship game will advance to regionals in the Roseburg area, a tournament featuring the top Babe Ruth teams from Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, British Columbia and Alberta.
