S.E. PORTLAND TOPS SRV

Winless S.E. Portland overcame and early 4-0 deficit by scoring seven runs in the third inning on the way to an 8-6 victory over previously unbeaten Snake River Valley in the final pool game for both teams.

Portland still finishes fourth in the National pool and will take on American top seed Astoria at 7:00 p.m. tonight in the quarterfinals, while SRV faces Pendleton at 10:00 a.m. this morning.

Snake River struck for four first inning runs off S.E. Portland pitcher Jack Lavey on a pair of 2-run singles by Alex Todd and Marcus Marines. But Southeast responded with a bigger inning that featured a little bit of everything: three hits packaged with four bases on balls, three errors, a hit batter and a balk. The key blows were a 2-run double by Alex Kehdi and RBI singles by Rudy Corbett and Eli Kimball.

In the end, SRV could look back at some missed opportunities. The Ontario-based All-stars left the bases loaded in the first inning and had two runners thrown out at the plate and another at third base in the third inning, only able to score one run in that frame.

SRV closed to within one run when Matt Anthony doubled and scored on a Casey Pfeifer single in the fifth inning, but Lavey held the Nationals scoreless the rest of the way, becoming the third Southeast Portland pitcher to throw a complete game at the tournament, following Rudy Corbett and Alex Kehdi.
