SURPRISING SRV OFF TO 2-0 START

Their celebration after Thursday's win over Beaverton may have pegged them as an underdog, but their play on Friday put them into the favorites' class.

Snake River Valley Nationals defeated Tri-County 6-2 to improve to 2-0 at the North Oregon Babe Ruth 14-year-old State Tournament at Astoria's Aiken Field.

Both teams won their pool openers on Thursday, with SRV overcoming an early 6-0 deficit to defeat big, bad Beaverton. Friday, the Ontario-based All-stars never trailed against the team based in Heppner and coached by Heppner High School coach Rick Paullus.

Matt Anthony, SRV's MVP catcher and leadoff batter, started the game by beating out an infield hit. After stealing his way to third base, Anthony scored on a 2-run double by shortstop K.J. Morris, which also plated Chase Fields, who had walked.

Tri-County took advantage of three errors and a passed ball to tally a run in the first, then tied the game in the second inning when CF/P Bryan Holland led off with a double and scored on Harold Stevens' sacrifice fly.

Anthony gave SRV the lead for good in the third inning after drawing a leadoff walk and stealing his way home. After nicking second base, the speedy backstop raced to third after a ground out by Brad Huddleston. With Chase Fields at the plate, SRV put the suicide squeeze on. The pitch was unhittable in the dirt and caromed off Tri-County catcher Wacy Coil high in the air as Anthony slid across the plate, giving SRV a 3-2 lead.

Anthony helped SRV protect the lead by gunning down baserunners attempting to steal in the fourth and fifth innings. Meanwhile, SRV padded its lead with two runs in the fourth inning on a Marcus Marines RBI double and a run scoring single by Diego Gonzalez. Anthony showed off his wheels and athletic ability in the seventh when he advanced to bases on a ground out to third base. The throw across the diamond beat Anthony to third, but he made a spectacular leap around the tag and over the bag. After Tri-County third baseman Brent Eckman dropped the ball and Anthony tumbled past the base into foul territory, Anthony beat Eckman back to the bag in a mad scramble, later scoring on a base hit by Fields.

Huddleston picked up the win on the mound for SRV, allowing four hits and just one earned run over five innings. Tri-County was held to just six hits by Huddleston and Fields, one day after picking up 14 hits in a win over S.E. Portland.
