ASTORIA NOT HITTING, NEARLY NO-HITTING
While Astoria still did not hit to its potential, the talented pitching trio of Ian Dueber, Max Johnson and Marcus Brown combined to shut down The Dalles in an 11-0 victory at Aiken Field Friday on the second day of the North Oregon State Tournament.
With the win, the 14-year-old Astoria All-stars improve to 1-1 in pool play while The Dalles drops to 0-2.
For the second day in a row, shortstop Ian Erickson delivered a clutch hit in the first inning, a 2-out, 2-run single to score Dane Lund and Marcus Brown. Astoria would plate four runs after two outs in the inning, as Dueber and rightfielder Rick Sarin followed with walks and Zach Dursse drew another free pass to force in Erickson. Jake Hatcher capped the inning with an RBI single to score Dueber. All four runs were unearned after two The Dalles errors in the inning.
Astoria added three more runs in the second inning. Dane Lund drew a leadoff walk, stole second, went to third on a fielders' choice and scored on Max Johnson's sacrifice fly. Erickson followed with a base hit to score Marcus Brown and after a double by Dueber, Rick Sarin flied out to center field deep enough to score Erickson with the second sacrifice fly of the inning.
With a comfortable 7-0 lead banked, Astoria's pitchers took care of the rest, holding The Dalles hitless until Aaron Cochran's leadoff single in the seventh inning off Brown, who recovered to retire the side with two strikeouts to close out the game.
Starting pitcher Ian Dueber went three innings, striking out three and walking one. Johnson pitched three perfect innings of relief with three strikeouts to get credit for the win. Brown fanned two and walked one in two innings to close the game
Erickson earned MVP honors with his 2-for-2, three RBI performance at the plate. Brown scored three runs.
The Dalles has just three hits through two games of the tournament.
