NO LOVE FOR THE GLOVE
Pendleton improved to 2-0 at the North Oregon Babe Ruth 14-year-old State Tournament with a 13-3, 5-inning victory over Harney/Grant.
Pendleton scored at least two runs in every inning and pitcher Jake Talbot got the win and the MVP nod with a 5-inning complete game, while going 2-for-2 at the plate with two runs scored.
Harney/Grant struck first with two runs in the top of the first inning when a pair of errors by Talbot allowed Jake Reynolds and Dalton Moore to score.
Pendleton countered with three runs in the bottom of the inning, the key hit coming on a bases loaded, two out, two RBI double by Bryant Tarter. Both teams went down in order in the second inning, but as the Pendleton players took the field for the top half of the first inning, the Pendleton coach lodged a protest, claiming that Harney/Grant centerfielder Christian Lassan was using an illegal piece of equipment.
Lassan, who played first base in Thursday's opening game, made a spectacular catch for the final out of the first inning and also recorded the final out of the second inning. Unfortunately, he was using the same glove as Thursday. It is illegal in Babe Ruth baseball to use a first baseman's glove in the outfield, so after a meeting of the protest committee, the final out of the second inning was wiped away and Pendleton leadoff batter Levin Fox returned to the plate. Fox drew a two out walk which turned out to be the beginning of a 3-run rally. Two more walks, an error and a 2-run Torin Garza single later, Pendleton had a 6-2 lead and was on its way to an easy victory.
Leading 11-3 in the bottom of the fifth, Dannon Baker walked, Travis Jones stroked an RBI double and Kyle Martinez ended the game with an RBI single, scoring Jones. Jones ended up 2-for-4 with two runs scored, Tarter and Garza each went 2-for-3 and Fox was 1-for-1 with a double and three runs scored.
Jake Reynolds had two of Harney/Grant's five hits.
