WARRIORS SHAKE SEASIDE, PLAY FOR STATE

Billy Sturgell's two out single to left center field scored Tyler Collier with the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth inning as the Warrenton Warriors won a wild Oregon Junior Baseball District 9 Tournament opener, defeating Seaside 8-7.

The Warriors advance to play Astoria today at 2:00 p.m. at Knappa's Teevin Field. The winner will clinch a state tournament berth and advance to the district championship game Sunday. The loser of today's game will play Seaside at 5:00 p.m. tonight in a winner-to-state, loser out elimination game.

Warrenton had a 7-4 lead in the sixth inning when Seaside rallied for three runs to tie the game. Mitch DeGandi's 2-run double scored Will Beatty and Alec Carlson with the game-tying runs. The senior shortstop and pitcher had a huge day at the plate, with a pair of doubles and a 2-run home run in a 3-run Seaside first inning. With DeGandi representing the go-ahead run at second base with one out, Tyler Collier came on in relief of starting pitcher Eric Gantenbein and recorded back-to-back strikeouts of Ross Knutsen and Matt Mizell to end the threat.

Collier retired the side in order in the seventh, then led off the eighth inning with his second double of the game, later scoring what turned out to be the game-winning run on Sturgell's base hit off DeGandi, who took the loss in relief.

Dan Wolfe pitched a perfect eighth inning to record the save.
