JOHNSON, TRI-COUNTY BAFFLE BEAVERTON
Starting pitcher Drew Johnson tossed a complete game 4-hitter as Tri-County defeated Beaverton 11-1 on the final day of pool play at the North Oregon Babe Ruth 14-year-old State Tournament in Astoria.
Tri-County grabbed a second place seed into Saturday's quarterfinals and will face The Dalles. Beaverton dropped to third in the National pool and will play American #2 seed Pendleton at 10:00 a.m.
Johnson did not overpower, but the Tri-County defense was stout, allowing only one harmless miscue.
It was a scoreless game until Tri-County blew it wide open with an 8-run fourth inning, sending 13 batters to the plate. All of the runs came after two outs. Brent Eckman led off the inning with a single. Wacy Coil tried to move the runner up with a bunt, but was called out for stepping out of the batter's box. Johnson followed with a base hit, putting runners at first and second, before Eckman was gunned down trying to steal by Beaverton catcher Spencer Ross.
The onslaught began with back-to-back bases on balls to Jared Huddleston and Bryan Holland, followed by a 2-run single by Jordan Hatfield. After Russell Thompson walked, starting pitcher Wilson Sherman-Burton gave way to reliever Ryan Kimball, who could not stop the bleeding. Back-to-back RBI singles by Harold Stevens and Chris Lien, followed by two straight hit batters and a 2-run single by Johnson, his second hit of the inning, gave Tri-County an 8-0 lead and the Heppner-area All-stars cruised from there.
Beaverton's only run came in the sixth inning, an RBI double by Spencer Ross plating Joey Pryor, who led off the inning with a hit.
