LANDWEHR STILL SMOKIN'; FISHERMEN ADVANCE

Brendan Landwehr continued his July tear at the plate with three hits, including two of Astoria's six doubles in a 9-1 victory over the Lake Oswego Lakers in the opening round of the Oregon Junior Baseball Association Division I Tournament at Marist High School in Eugene.

Adam Koehnke also had three hits as the Fishermen outhit the 6A Lakers 11-to-5 in the game.

While Astoria saw primarily a high school J.V. unit in Lake Oswego on Thursday, they will see a more experienced McNary squad in the quarterfinals Friday following the Salem school's 7-2 victory over Beaverton.

"Most of the Portland schools, you'll see them use Junior State for their J.V. kids," said Astoria head coach Dave Gasser, a former coach at three Portland area high schools. "The Valley League teams will be more varsity players. McNary's coach is the high school coach so he'll have most of his kids. They'll be tough."

Nick Bredleau was on the mound and on the ropes in the first inning, hitting a batter and walking two more, but was able to get out of the jam with only one run scoring. Astoria responded with four runs in the bottom of the first inning, with Landwehr picking up the first of his two doubles to drive in two.

Brent Culver added an RBI single in the second inning, Bredleau settled down and the Fishermen gradually pulled away for the win.

The senior righthander went the distance on the hill for the complete game victory. Astoria played error free ball behind him and collected 11 hits for their nine runs with contributions up and down the lineup.

The Fishermen take on McNary at Pleasant Hill High School at 3:30 p.m. Friday, with the winner advancing to the semifinals.
