ROYALS ROMP AT KNAPPA

Not your traditional homecoming opponent, the top-ranked, unbeaten Portland Christian Royals knocked off Knappa 44-0 Friday night.

Not your typical homecoming celebration, either. Earlier in the day at a school pep assembly, Knappa running back Steven Bokor was lost for the game when he was attacked and beaten by a classmate in front of the entire student body and much of the faculty. Bokor and the assailant had allegedly exchanged words minutes before the male student charged from the bleachers and landed three blows to the face before quickly exiting the gymnasium. Bokor suffered a concussion, a bruised jaw and a head laceration and may also have to miss the Loggers next game.

Already without injured starting FB/LB Mike Fulton, the Loggers were no match for the talented Royals, who skated to their eighth straight win without a loss.

PC QB Shawn Evans threw four touchdown passes to defending N.W. League Offensive Player of the Year Charlie Antal and also rushed for a 37-yard touchdown to put Portland Christian on the scoreboard in the first quarter.

"Evans is confident, calm and collected," said Knappa assistant coach Jeff Miller of the senior transfer, who took over signalcalling duties from Antal and Jesse Severson, who shared snaps last year. "He had guys hanging on his legs and its no big deal. Because he can run well it makes it really tough."

Evans, who completed 6-of-13 passes for 102 yards, also led the Royals in rushing with 69 yards on five carries. Troy Hernandez added 57 yards on eight carries with a 5-yard touchdown run in hte third quarter. Junior kicker Matt Larson was 5-for-6 on conversions and added a 40-yard field goal in the second quarter with plenty of room to spare. His only missed PAT was a result of a botched snap.

The Loggers rushed for 141 yards despite missing their top two ballcarriers. Joe Strickland led the way with 49 yards on eight totes, while freshman younger brother Cody Strickland ran well, but sacks limited his total to 22 yards on six carries. Gary Aho was held to 39 yards on 19 carries. Portland Christian had a 322 to 146 edge in total offense.

The best performance by a local was that of the veteran North Coast officiating crew, which only dropped two flags the entire game.

Despite back-to-back big losses to Nestucca and Portland Christian, the Loggers are still in position to make the playoffs due to their upset victory at Corbett earlier in the season. Knappa can nail down a spot with a win Friday at Gaston.

"Our goal was at least two league wins," said Miller. "We can still get that with Gaston."

The Loggers close out the regular season with a non-league game against Chemawa, a member of the new 3A PacWest Conference that is playing an independent schedule that includes games against the Northwest League teams.
