WARRIORS SWEEP PAST SOUTH BEND
The Warrenton Lady Warriors continued to cause fits with their defense and the Warrenton boys finally put together a solid fourth quarter as both teams picked up road non-league victories at South Bend Tuesday night.
The Lady Warriors caused 38 South Bend turnovers on the way to a 48-38 victory over the Indians. The game was close until a 16-1 opening run in the fourth quarter, with Warrenton scoring 12 points off Indians turnovers caused by a trapping press.
"Jordyn Holt and Jordane Marxer play real long out on top and are real quick off the floor," said Warriors head coach John Mattila. "They got their hands on a lot of balls and deflected them. Actually in the third quarter we forced a lot of turnovers, but I think we were 1-for-18 from the floor so that kind of kept us in there."
Freshman guard Jordyn Holt led three players in double figures with 11 points. Audrey Dove had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds and sophomore guard Jordane Marxer had eight of Warrenton's 23 steals to go with six points.
The Warriors boys held on to defeat South Bend 49-43 for their first win of the season in three tries.
As in previous losses to Knappa and Naselle, the Warriors squandered a double-digit lead before pulling away with a strong fourth quarter.
"Both games before this we were right in it, leading for three and a half quarters," said Jannush. "We played well, but the fourth quarter at Naselle wasn't the greatest. We had some turnovers. We had some missed rebounds. We had some defensive lapses. But overall, I'm real pleased with the way we are right now."
Warrenton led 16-6 in the first period before an 11-0 run carrying into the second quarter gave South Bend its first lead at 17-16. Warrenton led 26-20 at halftime behind 11 first half points from senior guard Eric Gantenbein.
Up 28-20 after scoring the first basket of the second half, the Warriors watched as South Bend rallied again with a 12-3 run to go up 32-31. The Indians hit 4 of 5 3-point shot attempts in the third period to take a 37-35 lead into the final frame. The lead would change hands three more times in the final quarter before a Ryan Lampi 3-pointer put Warrenton up 43-41. Michael Davis followed with a backdoor layup off an assist by Michael O'Casey and Warrenton pulled away with a 9-0 run down the stretch to close out the win.
"We got the momentum shifted," said Warriors head coach Josh Jannush, who picked up his first head coaching victory. "I'm real proud of the guys fighting on and taking control of this one. The other two games I kind of felt that Naselle and Knappa kind of controlled our tempo. The guys did a nice job of staying composed and finishing this one strong."
Gantenbein finished with 16 points and O'Casey added 14 points and 10 rebounds. The Warriors limited South Bend to two offensive rebounds for the game while outrebounding the Indians 33-22 overall.
"Being outrebounded at Naselle in the last game, we came out in practice and had a huge emphasis on rebounding," said Jannush. "O'Casey's just a physical kid. He loves when I tell him just to go strong and go for the board. He's more than williing to get in there and scrap it out."
Warrenton hosts Ocosta for an OSAA Endowment doubleheader tonight, with the girls varisty game at 6:00 p.m. Full price admission will be charged with no passes excepted. Half the proceeds go to the OSAA Endowment fund, supporting extracurricular activities in Oregon schools.
