FISH BOYS SWIM TO NEWPORT WIN
Swimming at the 6-team Newport Invitational, the Astoria boys took home a first place finish with 328 team points, while the Lady Fishermen took third with 269.
The meet, originally scheduled for Dec. 15 but postponed after the windstorm, featured 4A girls favorite North Bend, which took first place with 413 points, followed by Taft with 292 points. North Bend's boys finised a close second to Astoria with 293 points and Taft was third with 259. Newport's teams both took fourth place, while Junction City and Toledo were the other participating schools.
Astoria's Dustin Manley easily won the 100 freestyle, finishing in 56.77, three and a half seconds ahead of second place Jon Wash of North Bend. The junior finished second in the 200 freestyle and also led off Astoria's first place 200 Medley Relay team and swam lead for the 200 freestyle relay team, which placed second to North Bend. Classmate Eddie Duret swam both relays and took home a pair of second place finishes in the 200 IM and 500 freestyle.
Astoria's girls 400 freestyle relay team, featuring seniors Wendi Agalzoff and Rachel Gascoigne and juniors Bridget Nurding and Meredith Barnes, took first place with a time of 4:04.36. The same quartet finished second behind North Bend in the 200 free relay and Hannah Whisler swam lead with Gascoigne, Nurding and Barnes in the 200 medley relay, also a second place to North Bend. Barnes was a runner-up in the 50 freestyle, with Nurding and Agalzoff finishing in second place respectively in the 100 butterfly and 100 freestyle.
"We didn't enter the girls to be truly competitive as a team," said Astoria assistant coach Paul Gascoigne. "We were looking at relay layouts and had most of our top girls swimming in one individual event to make them available for all three relays.
"There was some really good competition today and we got our first look at the North Bend girls, who should be a powerhouse at the state meet."
North Bend's Denise Green, a senior, and freshman Michelle Jasmer were each 4-time winners at Tuesday's meet.
Astoria's next scheduled competition is tomorrow at Tillamook, a league dual meet which will also feature Rainier and Taft.
