MOOKS OUTGUN GULLS

It's still a 4-way race for the Cowapa League title, but Seaside and Banks are getting closer each time out.

The Gulls hung with Tillamook for a half and made a fourth quarter run at the Cheesemakers, but Tillamook came away with a 51-39 victory over the Gulls to improve to 4-2 in league play.

Seaside led 8-7 after one period and trailed by just three points at halftime, but a stingy Mook defense limited the Seagulls second half scoring opportunities.

"We wanted to be patient and pass the ball around and make them work," said Seaside head coach Bill Westerholm, whose team had the ball for two minutes on one first quarter possession, working the ball back and forth against Tillamook's 2-3 zone defense. "Create less possessions for them on the offensive end. We did a pretty good job of it. We had some high percentage shots, we just didn't do a good job of putting them down or getting to the free throw line."

The Mooks finally got some separation in the third period, outscoring Seaside 16-8 to open up a 34-23 lead entering the final period.

Up 39-23 early in the fourth quarter after a 3-point play by Andrew Baertlein followed by an inside basket from Justin "Buster" Hartford, the Mooks looked like they would pull away for an easy win. Seaside had one last flurry in store.

Ed Kauffunger scored off a Damian Olivar assist, then blocked Tillamook shots on two straight possessions leading to Seagulls points.

Down 40-29, Dennis Olstedt drew a foul on the baseline on Tillamook's 6-3 senior post Chris Barksdale, who was assessed a technical foul for his profane reaction to the call. Having already fouled out of the game, Barksdale was given another technical foul for whipping his jersey out of his shorts on his way to the sideline, a rules violation instituted last year.

With four technical foul shots, one-and-one free throws on the personal foul and possession of the ball, the Gulls had an opportunity to jump right back in the ball game. Opportunity missed! Olstedt missed the front end of the one-and-one, Kauffunger converted just two of the technical foul shots and the Gulls turned the ball over on a 3-second violation. A potential eight or nine point swing netted just two points and Tillamook was able to hold off the Seagulls for the win.

"We had to make buckets and we didn't make buckets," said Seaside head coach Bill Westerholm. "There are some teams in the league that we match up well against and one of them is Tillamook. We just didn't take advantage of the opportunities that we had."

Kauffunger finished with 15 points for Seaside. Andrew Baertlein paced the Cheesemakers with 14 points and Hartford was a defensive force inside, blocking six shots to go with his 12 points.

Tillamook played an efficient game, hitting 56% from the field on just 32 shots compared to Seaside's 32% shooting. Kauffunger and Matt Peinhardt, Seaside's primary inside scorers, were held to a combined 5-for-20 from the field.

The Mooks improved to 10-5 overall, while Seaside's overall record dropped to 7-12 heading into a road contest at league-leading Yamhill-Carlton on Friday. Tillamook hosts 14-4 Astoria on Thursday.

Barksdale's eligibility for that game is in question and is pending a final report and review by the commissioner of the North Coast Officials Association and potentially an appeal made to the OSAA. Normally, two technical fouls lead to an ejection and an automatic suspension from the next game for a player or coach, however, Barksdale was already disqualified with a fifth foul when the technicals were assessed.
