INDIANS SWEEP FISH IN COWAPA DUAL
Scappoose head track coach David Harley had the Astoria girls team tabbed as a potential state champion this year.
Apparently, those sentiments provided plenty of motivation for his girls to rise to the occasion at yesterday's Cowapa League dual meet.
The Indians defended the home course with a pair of narrow wins over Astoria in the Cowapa opener for both schools beating the Fishermen 77-68 in the boys meet and pulling off an 80-65 victory in the girls meet.
Winning both of the relays and taking five of the top six spots in the distance races provided the Lady Indians with a safe margin, despite Astoria taking ten of a possible 17 first places
Sophomore Laura Bobek is picking up from a record-setting freshman year. After impressive marks at the Shelton Throwers jamboree last month, Bobek had a pair of impressive launches yesterday at Scappoose, heaving the discus 133 feet, 3 inches and winning the discus with a throw of 40-11.
"Both of those marks will be some of the top marks in the state," said Astoria head coach Lynn Jackson.
Astoria swept the top three spots in the javelin, paced by K.J. Carr's throw of 105-10, followed by newcomer Lynnae Huber (98-6) and freshman Kaycee Lilley (88-8).
Charlene Harber, also a soph, took home three firsts, winning the 100 (12.84), 200 (28.42) and long jump (17-3 1/4)
There could be several close duals in Cowapa League girls competition this season
"With Yamhill-Carlton, it's not going to take as many points to score a championship mark," said Jackson. "That makes six very strong teams this year in our league."
Astoria made it a clean co-ed sweep in the javelin as Nathan Stinnett (162-2), Tyler Riekkola (126-6) and Jake Banta (126-6) swept the top three boys spots. Ben Mattingly (125-2) and Alex Whitaker (98-10) went 1-and-2 in the discus and Whittaker took first place in the shot put. (48-5).
Justin Roberts made a fine debut for the Fishermen, winning the high jump (5-10) and 110 hurdles (17.48), but once again, Scappoose's depth in the lower places allowed the Indians to edge Astoria in total points.
"Hopefully, as our younger and inexperienced athletes can step up, those slots will be filled," said Jackson, " and by the beginning of the month and heading into the district championships in mid-May we'll be in form."
Astoria's next competition comes at the Daily Astorian Invitational at Seaside on Monday at 3:00 p.m.
